Pune Institute of Engineering and Technology (College of Engineering/Government Engineering College) Established in July, 1854 as "Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School", the Institute's main objective was to provide instruction to the subordinate officers in the Public Works Department. Later, the College changed its name to "College of Engineering, Poona." The College has its own Boat Club and offers students a perfect blend of challenging academics and adventurous extra-curricular act

FACTS

1854 - Establishment of the Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School.

1866 - The College was affiliated to the University Of Bombay for the Degree of Licentiate of Civil Engineering.

1911 - All non-Engineering courses were closed, and the college was renamed as " College of Engineering , Poona " . (C.O.E.P)

1912 - The first B.E. Civil graduated in this year.

1932 - The College was affiliated to the University of Bombay for the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical).

1937 - The New revised course in Civil Engineering was approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers, London, for exemption from Sections A and B of the Institution examination for Associate membership. This was the only College in India to receive this recognition.

1939 - Admission of first female student.

1949 - The College was affiliated to the University of Poona.

Trivia
|
The most eminent student of the Institute is Sir M. Visvesvaraya, who stood First in the L.C.E. examination in 1884.
The Boat Club was established in 1928. Each year it organizes the Regatta, which is of prime importance to COEPians. The Institute celebrated its Sesquicentenary Anniversary (150 years) in 2004.
